I always feel like there’s something wrong with me as an automotive enthusiast, because everyone loves the first gen Camaro, but they seem to love the ones with the exposed headlights. I, on the other hand, have always preferred the hideaways (despite any penchants for mechanical failure). The grille looks so much cleaner and meaner.
Maybe it’s because the first Gen 1 Camaro I ever saw was John Cusack’s in Better Off Dead. Maybe it’s because I grew up lusting after the General Lee, which had similar hideaways. The ‘69 GTO is my all time favorite muscle car design, and it also has hideaways.
Maybe I'm Fred in the Mystery Machine, and that's just my fetish.

There is nothing cooler or meaner looking than a first gen RS Camaro. I might be a bit biased though. Really only reason why people prefer the standard grille over the RS is the complete mess or wiring or hoses for the system from the factory. There's a mile of vacuum hose, big actuators and a good sized tank to run these headlights on 69/69 model. 67s were electric but used undersized motors.
